Nigerian teenager launches an LGBT-inclusive fashion brand

Daniel Kunke, a 19-year old Nigerian college student has spoken about why he decided to start an LGBT-inclusive clothing brand. In an interview, the teenager who is currently studying Mass communications at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos said that his aim is to ensure that everyone is “equally represented” by making sure that “there’s something available for everyone” Can you tell us about yourself, your brand, how it all started, and what inspired it? I am Daniel Kunke, a 19-year old student of Mass Communication at Yabatech. I am a janitor, brand owner and I write during my bored times. I am the founder of Kunke’s Apparels, a new Lagos-based clothing line focused on making urban wears that can be worn to major occasions especially in Lagos where we have all the altè and urbane hangouts and locations. The idea to start up a fashion brand has always been there, but I never did put any real efforts into making it happen not until recently when I took the idea more seriously. This happened immediately after I stopped working as a personal assistant to my previous employer. One of the things that inspired me to start up a clothing line were majorly the idea of having my own thing and to be independent as against working under the employ of someone else which isn’t really something that I like. Also, the reason why I decided to run an inclusive brand came as result of my interest in socio-discriminatory topics and my strong desire to ensure that all persons regardless of their sexuality or gender identity are equally represented across board. So going forward, what’s the overall plan, and don’t you worry that being an LGBT-inclusive brand will hurt your business considering people’s negative perception about LGBT issues? Honestly, at this point, the plan now is just to sit back and see how everything turns out and how far the brand could go. In fact my aim right now is to ensure that more people get to see what I am doing and are able to patronize me so that I can remain in the business, not necessarily to be the number 1 clothing line in the world, not like that will be a bad thing if it happens though (smiles). And also, I really do not think that being inclusive would have a negative impact on my brand, I mean the brand is not just for a particular set of people it’s for everyone, so just come into the store and pick whatever it is that you like and go, whatever inscription that is on any other clothing isn’t your business. It’s just that simple. When people relate with your brand, how do you want them to feel and how do you want to come across to them? At Kunke Apparels, we want to ensure that people are entirely comfortable with wearing our clothing’s, that’s why we strive to be an inclusive brand so as to ensure that there’s something for everyone when they visit our stores or decide to shop with us. Also we want to prove to other brands, that being inclusive is very possible and very important and that it doesn’t hurt at all if everyone is fully represented and given the opportunity to be themselves. Can you tell us about the progress you have made so far with your brand since you started? I’ll say that I’ve gotten quite some positive responses so far since I started my brand. As an inclusive brand, the support I have gotten has been very encouraging from both members of the LGBT community in Nigeria and heterosexual persons, and every other person in fact. DAKAR - Several hundred protesters rallied Sunday in Dakar to demand that homosexuality be made a crime in Senegal, according to AFP journalists. It is not illegal to identify as gay in the deeply conservative Muslim nation, but same-sex activity is already punishable by up to five years in prison. Religious leaders and civil society figures addressed hundreds of jubilant protesters, who had gathered in a central square for the rally organised by And Samm Jikko Yi, a civil society collective that promotes "correct values". Ousmane Kouta, a representative of a student religious group, told the crowd that Senegal is a country of faith and values. "It is homophobic and will remain so forever," he said, to cheers and chanted slogans. Aminata Diallo, a member of an association for young Muslims, told AFP that she attended the rally to protest homosexuality and demand its criminalisation. Other protesters were more extreme. "We will kill them, or we will burn them alive. We'll never accept homosexuality," said 56-year-old municipal official Demba Dioup. Senegal's government has repeatedly ruled out legalising homosexuality. Senegal's President Macky Sall has previously stressed that gay people are not ostracised in the nation of 16 million however, and that the same-sex activity ban reflects cultural norms. Consensual same-sex relations are legal in 21 of 54 African countries, according to a 2019 report by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association. Source

WhatsApp has gone down, leaving its millions of users without the ability to send or receive messages. Tracing website Down Detector showed what appeared to be a global outage on Tuesday evening, as the messaging app appeared to have broken. Chats did appear to load, but new messages would refuse to send within those chats. Some previous WhatsApp outages have been followed by problems at Facebook and Instagram, presumably because they share infrastructure. But those services appeared to continue working as normal. Unlike those other Facebook-owned apps, WhatsApp does not operate a status page to update users and developers on any problems with its service, meaning there is no easy way to know whether the company is aware of the outage of how widespread it might be. The company does have a devoted Twitter account – under the name of WhatsApp Status – but it has not been used since 2014. Source

A 28-year-old trans woman named Nina Pop was found stabbed to death in her Sikeston, Missouri apartment on May 3. Police are investigating the incident and whether it constitutes a hate crime. While neither police nor the media have released any additional details about Pop’s death, her Facebook page says she attended high school in Sikeston (population 16,000) and a 15-minute live video posted there shows that she attended a party in the early morning hours on the day of her death. The video shows Pop walking around a field and a structure of some sort, sipping on a drink while people excitedly talk around her. She is wearing makeup and earrings and has a sweatshirt on. “We are seeing an epidemic of violence that can no longer be ignored,” said Tori Cooper, director of community engagement for the Human Rights Campaign’s Transgender Justice Initiative. “Transgender and gender non-conforming people, especially trans women of color, risk our lives by living as our true selves — and we are being violently killed for doing so.” HRC says she is the 10th trans person to be murdered this year. Among the other trans women murdered this year are Penélope Díaz Ramírez, Layla Pelaez Sánchez and Serena Angelique Velázquez Ramos, three women who were all murdered in Puerto Rico during the same week. There’s also Johanna Metzger, a trans woman found stabbed to death in Baltimore, Maryland on April 11; Monica Diamond, a trans woman brutally gunned down in front of police while receiving treatment in an ambulance; Yampi Arocho, a Puerto Rican trans man who was shot in the face; Neulisa “Alexa” Luciano Ruiz, a Puerto Rican trans woman murdered after people harassed her for using a McDonald’s restroom; and Dustin Parker, a trans male taxi driver shot to death in his own car. Addendum: straight couples keep pets too, But it's just that for gays, the ratio is higher.. When two lesbians move in together, first thing they get is either a dog or cat. Esp in the western world..Nigerians are getting there gradually.. Personally, I know a couple of gay people with pets here in Lagos, and now my gay neighbors have joined the bandwagon. So this informed my rant above.

And since the festival began this week, Kristen has repeatedly gazed – or “gayzed,” according to fans – at Cate, sending them into a tailspin of ecstasy. The Twilight star came out in 2015, when she confirmed she was “not hiding” her relationship with then-girlfriend Alicia Cargile. Kristen, who is currently dating Stella Maxwell, then said on Saturday Night Live last year that she was “like, so gay”. The 28-year-old has not defined her sexuality, but clarified last year that she would “definitely” still date men. It however does not look like men are on her mind this week. In fact, it looks like Kristen has eyes for only one double-Oscar-winning actress. Rigid sexual orientations have defined the preference of men and women for decades; however, a new study is attempting to do away with strict definitions of sexuality. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, argues that there’s no such thing as a “straight” man or woman. Rather, people operate on a spectrum. Researchers showed men and women different kinds of pornographic material. Rather than relying on self-reporting, the study looked at physiological responses to the sexual material. Namely pupil dilation, which is a sign of sexual arousal. The study found that women’s eyes dilated when they viewed a man and a woman being sexuality intimate, and when two women were sexually intimate. Lesbian are more aroused to their preferred sex than the other sex, a pattern normally seen in men. A similar phenomenon was seen in men. Talking to Broadly, study author Ritch C Savin-Williams, who is also the Director of Developmental Psychology at Cornell University, said: We show straight men a picture of a woman masturbating and they respond just like a straight guy, but then you also show them a guy masturbating and their eyes dilate a little bit. So we're actually able to show physiologically that all guys are not either gay, straight, or bi. He argues that though the idea of bisexuality as the norm is becoming more accepted when it comes to women, men are still struggling with patriarchal stigma. Savin-Williams has a point. There have been multiple studies done that conclude women are naturally bisexual, like this one by Dr Gerulf Rieger at the University of Essex. He did an identical study where he looked at pupil dilation in women who were shown videos of attractive men and women. Source

When is it right to open up and accept who you really are Especially because Nigerians right now are hostile to queer people, and the police are having fun arresting homosexuals instead of enforcing law and order. When is the right time to tell that friend, brother, sister ,parents etc and stop being in silky relationships that u r not meant to be? I hope the house would kindly help shed more light on this

A woman has opened up about how it is to be a lesbian and Muslim. Zayna, 40, spoke to the Manchester Evening News to say she had been beaten, threatened and humiliated because she is gay. She did not deny her true identity despite the abuse she had received before moving from Pakistan to the UK. While studying for her PhD, Zayna said she was kicked out of university because fellow students said they thought she was “dangerous”. At an Islamic school, she said she was forced by fellow staff to leave or face police action. She had started a relationship with a fellow teacher. But staff said they would be reported to police as prostitutes if they did not end their relationship and leave. Of an incident where her father abused her for spending time with another teenager, she said: “My father came upstairs and wanted to kill me and beat me like anything. “He told me how to behave. That was the first time I felt unsafe in my own home. “I still have that horrible pain in my lower back and can’t walk properly.” The graduate says she is still a practising Muslim and that her sexuality and her religion are both important to her. She said: “I was born a Muslim and I want to die a Muslim. But if someone wants to kill me then why? Just because I’m a lesbian? “I am a strong brave person but so many people like me don’t have that courage. I realised I need to come out and tell everyone about my story.” She now lives in Manchester, UK, and speaks out on behalf of LGBT+ Muslims. Zayna grew up in Karachi, Pakistan, and her parents were conservative Muslims with no other children. Her parents are both dead. She describes herself as a tomboy, and says she realised she is gay when she turned 13. Zayna says it was “very hard” and that she was told “you are not Muslim if you are a lesbian”. Going on, she also says she thinks the Quran’s message about homosexuality has been misinterpreted. She now says she feels calm because she is able to have relationships without fear of persecution. ‘I was forced to cooperate’ – Victim of anti-gay blackmail

It was supposed to be just a friendly visit, but it turned into robbery and blackmail for Victor, as all his money was taken from him by teenagers who accused him of being gay. Gay Nigerians are often the victims of blackmail, robbery, and extortion on the basis of the country’s “Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act,” which threatens LGBT people with prison terms of 10 to 14 years. Victor (not his real name), a Nigerian teenager, told NoStringsNG of just such an experience he had two years ago. “I connected with this guy on 2go [the chat program for mobile phones]. He was in Ogun State. We became friends in no time, as he seemed really nice. We stayed in contact with each other for two months, calling and chatting, until I decided to visit him, unknowing to me that I was embarking on a journey I wouldn’t forget in a hurry.” Victor said that, upon his arrival at his supposed friend’s place in Ogun State, he met several teenagers who seemed nice at first, but things soon became intense and scary, as they pulled out knives. “When I got to his place in Ogun State, I met some other boys there. They were all five in number. They waited for me to settle in and then they all brought out their knives. I was dead scared. They called me all sorts of names. They threatened to call my family. I was forced to cooperate as they robbed me; they took the N3,000 [about US $8] on me and my school bag. My Blackberry Bold 5 [smartphone] was also taken away from me.” They also took his ATM debit card and threatened to call his family to inform them that he is gay. “I was working at that time so I had about N40,000 [US $112] in my savings account. They took my ATM card and later withdrew all of it leaving just N1,500 for me. This I discovered after I went to the bank the next day to block my account.” Victor said that, until now, he has been unable to speak about the incident because he still lives with the shock. “I couldn’t tell anyone, not even my parents; I just let them get away with theft.” Source -

Last week my son and daughter welcomed a sister into the world! #MayteAmor was born on Wednesday, October 4th at 3:26 PM - weighing 7 lbs 4 oz, measuring 20 inches long, and she's perfect! Named after her grandparents - Mario & Teresita - their love will forever flow through her and protect her and all of my kids. Grandma is over the moon and so are her siblings! Mayte Amor waited until 41 weeks to make her fashionably late arrival. She's doing everything a newborn should do and doing it so well. She's a whole 7 days advanced! Thank you to my sister for keeping everything running so smoothly on the site. Thank you to everyone who's reached out with love and concern over my needed social media break. And, most importantly, thank you to the surrogate who gave me the greatest gift anyone could ever receive! And thank you to the other two surrogates who helped us as well! And thank you to all the surrogates who give so selflessly and whose kindness is inspiring! Okereke who was born to Roman Catholic Igbo Nigerian parents in Liverpool launched his own solo musical career in 2010 after a successful musical career with his band Roc party. His solo career saw him release two albums ‘The boxer’ [2010], ‘Trick’ [2014], as well as three EPs ‘The Hunter’ [2011] Heartbreaker [2013] and ‘Candy Flip’ [2014]. In March 2010, Okereke came out as gay in a BUTT magazine article, with hopes that it will inspire young people and let them know that it’s ok to be uniquely different. “The reason I’m doing it is whenever I go out, I’m always stopped by young, gay kids who say it’s really refreshing and encouraging to see someone like me being out in a relatively mainstream band. “If I’d have had someone saying it’s okay to be you when I was a teenager, I’d probably be a very different person. That is why I’m doing this now, after years of not doing it. It’s good to show that gays come in all shapes and sizes.” He said. Okereke’s said one of his new songs titled ‘Yemaya’ from his anticipated album ‘Fatherland’ was inspired by the moment when he and his partner decided to have their first child together. “In the West African Yoruba religion, Yemaya is the mother goddess of the ocean, she is kinda the patron saint of pregnant women and fertility. According to myth, when her waters broke, it caused a great flood creating rivers and streams and the first mortal humans were created from her womb. When I knew we were having a baby she started to appear in my thoughts and dreams a fair bit.”
