The exhibition was great. Missed the opening as the time coincided with our match (Chelsea-Manu) but attended one or two of the displays. I can say I'm a humble owner of one of Godwin Arikpo's beautiful paintings. Pleasure.

There’s a recent study in the United States that shows the renaissance of sorts regarding slavery, Jim Crow and Reconstruction and their roles in defining the art of the African diaspora. The evidence of these abound in the emergence of African American Museums and African Studies faculties across the land. This is in stark contrast to the decline in attendance and financial health of traditional mainstream Museums in the US. Many states and cities with these African American Institutions are experiencing massive uptick in interest and attendance in the last decade. The crown jewel in this nascent effort is the National Museum of African American History and Culture opened lately in Washington DC.

So against this backdrop and other events which I will begin some sort of expositions here on NL in the near future, I can confirm to you that the tide of Contemporary Art is shifting towards appreciating the artistic and cultural journey of people of African ancestry.

There’s an emerging trend that’s recognizing the contribution and prowess of Contemporary African artists through art, music and film. The lens of attention has swung onto the achievements of talents from the African continent and diaspora. Think of the movie ‘Black Panther’ and the records it smashed! Chiwetelu Ejiofor and Chimamanda’s celebrity. Ben Enwonwu’s and Anatsui’s record painting sales; Kehinde Riley’s Obama portrait and lately Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s staggering value in the art world are some of the beacons of hope that’s emerged from African art and culture. All these key players emerged in the last 10 years; and the acceleration of this trend can only be comfortably predicted.
So it’s obvious that the perception and regard for African art has vaulted from the trash of insignificance to becoming a prominent dish on the table of the Contemporary Art buffet.

Excerpts from my book " forecast 2019; African Arts in  America, a boom greater than the Nigerian  Oil boom"

Of course its neo-colonization again. Well, its high time we quit 'wolfing' and begin to partner to prove our all time natural endowmings and ingenuity.

Did i hear someone say "not without an apology", ?  Well what's the need for an apology without reparation? And what's the need for reparation when we can rebuild?

Do you get it?

Nollywood Portraits; a radical beauty.

Solo exhbition by Newyork based photographer : Ike Ude

21cwbyp.jpg

The exhibition is running at the the Alliance Française, Mike Adenuga Centre, on Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. And ends on Sunday, June 16, 2019.

Titled, Nollywood Portraits: A Radical Beauty, Ike Udé makes an impressive debut at an equally promising venue that has been attracting - since its opening the country’s A-list artists. It also attracted high networth guests, arts connoisseurs, corporate gurus. The show features 64 enthralling portraits of some of the best Nollywood players.

In the portraits, which are full length and captured in uniquely elegaic style, he orchestrates a histrionic filmic atmosphere of light and colour, whereby the industry’s illustrious veterans, in company of the next generation of emerging talent, pose in classically staged shots.

"The whole exhibition is in colour. There are 64 individual portraits and one grand group portrait of all the subjects, which I named ‘The School of Nollywood’ a reference to and departure from Rafael’s 1509 fresco, The School of Athens, which can be seen at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The painting is of a grandiose architectural framework, depicting prominent philosophers of Greek antiquity, posed in a manner whereby they dominate but do not crowd their environment" -  Ike Ude,

Ike has been described as a master portraitist along with Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt van Rijn and Andy Warhol and has exhibited in solo and group shows and has been reviewed in a number of publications including, Art in America, The New Yorker, Art Daily, L’UOMO Vogue, Flash Art, and The New York Times. His articles on fashion and art have been published in magazines and newspapers worldwide.
