Twenty four countries from six continents will be part of this tournament taking place in Canada. From June 6 to July 5.

The 2015 women's World Cup will kick off on Saturday, June 6, as hosts Canada face China at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. But before a ball is kicked, fans will get to enjoy the traditional opening ceremony, set to begin at 5:40 pm. ET

Grammy Award winning artist Sarah McLachlan and Juno Award winning duo Tegan and Sara will perform.

Tegan and Sara are originally from Alberta, so they'll have the opportunity to play in front of their own fans.

McLachlan, who dedicated one of her songs to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, will perform “In Your Shoes”, a song that was inspired by Malala Yousafzai’s incredible story and her strength of character to stand up to what she believed in

The first goal ever in the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ was scored by China PR’s Ma Li in the 22nd minute of the tournament’s opening match between the hosts and Norway on 16 November 1991.

Ma Li gave the Chinese a 1-0 lead going into half-time in Guangzhou, and the hosts ultimately ran away with the match as it finished 4-0. China PR once again are a part of the Women's World Cup Opening Match this year, when they face hosts Canada on Saturday 6 June at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.

Hosts Canada will like their chances against a young China team in the opening match, as the 1999 runners-up failed to qualify for the tournament in 2011 and have elected to travel to Edmonton with plenty of fresh faces in the squad.

Alberta’s Capital City, Edmonton will host elite female soccer teams from around the world for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015.

Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium will host a total of 11 matches, including a semi-final. The final of the 2015 women's World Cup will be played in Vancouver.

It is expected that over half a billion people, worldwide will watch the match on Saturday, from their homes. While thousands will take it in, in person at Edmonton's stadium

Edmonton Tourism said FIFA Women’s World Cup is projected to inject $48.5 million into the Edmonton visitor economy.

FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2015- Group D in focus

In Group D all four teams still harbour hopes of reaching the last 16.

Match of the dayNigeria - USA, Vancouver, 17.00 local time. (1am, Nigerian time)

With their current tally at four points, the US Girls only need a draw to progress to the next round or a win to top the group. In contrast, not even the three points will necessarily guarantee safe passage for the Super Falcons, who have a solitary point going into this match. The odds seem to be very much in favour of the Stars and Stripes, who have four wins from four games against their African opponents, scoring 16 goals while conceding just twice. Their most recent meeting in the 2007 group stage ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for USA.

Yet anything will happen. And we all know it.

The other matchesThe statistics for the other game in Group D are similarly one-sided. In their nine previous meetings, Sweden have emerged triumphant on six occasions, scoring 20 times along the way, while Australia have just a solitary win and seven strikes to their name. The two teams last competed against each other in Germany four years ago, with the Scandinavians sealing a ***-1 quarter-final victory on their way to a third-place finish. With two draws so far in Canada, the Swedes have yet to reach their full potential, while Australia are a step closer to reaching the knockout stages for the third Women’s World Cup in a row after beating Nigeria.

The statisticsWith Lotta Schelin, Lisa Dahlkvist and Therese Sjogran all in Canada and starting the first two group games, Sweden have at their disposal all three goalscorers from their encounter with Australia four years ago, while the Matildas’ sharpshooter that day, Ellyse Perry, was not selected for the squad this year.

Group D Nigeria - USA (BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, 17.00 - (1 am Nigerian time) Australia - Sweden (Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton, 18.00)

ROUND OF 16

The top two teams from each group qualify for the Round of 16. However, for mathematicians out there, that leaves us with only 12 teams in the Round of 16. To make up for this, the 4 top ranked 3rd place teams will also qualify. Best losers they are called. What other 4 teams will make it?
