AfroBasket: D’Tigress hammer Guinea

D’Tigress hammered Guinea 100-47 to get their second win in the Cameroon 2015 AfroBasket Women in Yaounde on Sunday.

 

Nigeria lost 57-51 to archrivals Angola in their opening game on Friday and got back into the tournament by beating Egypt 97-68 on Saturday.

 

D’Tigress dominated their match against Guinea from the first quarter, which ended 25-9. The Guineans put up a better performance in the second quarter and scored 19 points to Nigeria’s 18 points.

 

After the half time break, the girls, coached by Scott Nnaji, came out smoking, scoring 30 points in the third quarter to Guinea’s 12. In spite of the Guinean’s redoubled efforts in the fourth quarter, they conceded 27 points and scored only seven.

 

D’Tigress captain Helen Ogunjimi got 19 points. Edema Edeferioka had 10 rebounds, while Sarah Ogoke had the highest number of assists, 12.

 

In two-point field goal, Nigeria had 49.2 per cent to Guinea’s 37.2; for three points, Nigeria had 35 per cent accuracy to Guinea’s 13.6; while free throw was 75 per cent for Nigeria and 66. 7 per cent for Guinea.

 

Nigeria also led in rebounds, turnovers, steals and blocks and the biggest lead in favour of Nigeria was 53 points.

 

Nigeria will face 10-time winners Senegal in their next Group B match on Monday.

AfroBasket: D’Tigress reach quarters

 

D’Tigress on Tuesday night beat Algeria 79-49 in their fifth and last Group B game at the 2015 AfroBasket Women holding in Yaounde, Cameroon, to reach the quarterfinals.

 

The Nigerian team started the tournament with a 57-51 defeat to Angola but went on to win the rest of their group matches, beating Egypt 97-68, Guinea 100-47 and Senegal 75-64.

 

Nigeria dominated the encounter taking the lead from the first quarter, which ended 15-13.

 

D’Tigress also outscored Algeria in the second quarter 15-8. They won the third quarter 24-8. Although the opponents fought back in the fourth quarter, Nigeria won 25-20.

 

D’Tigress’ top performer in the game was Adaora Elonu, who scored 15 points, had three rebounds, seven steals and +16 efficiency, while Algeria’s top performer was Lylia Tlemsani, who scored seven points, had four rebounds two assists, two steals and +12 efficiency.

 

Nigeria scored 25 two-point field goals from 58 attempts; four three-point field goals out of 11 attempts and 17 free throws from 25 attempts.

 

On the other hand, the North Africans scored 16 two-point field goals from 46 attempts; five three-point field goals out of 19 attempts and two free throws from six attempts.

 

The International Basketball Federation’s statistics show that Nigeria had 57 rebounds to Algeria’s 32; 19 assists to Algeria’s 12; steals were 17-12 in Nigeria’s favour and Algeria had two blocks while Nigeria had one.

 

Algeria had 26 turnovers to Nigeria’s 25; committed 18 fouls while Nigeria committed 11, and their biggest lead in the game was two points, while Nigeria’s biggest lead was 32 points.

 

D’Tigress are the highest scoring side so far, having scored 402 points and conceded 285.

D’Tigress face Cameroon in AfroBasket semis

Nigeria on Thursday reached the next stage of the 2015 FIBA Africa AfroBasket Women in Yaounde, Cameroon.

 

D’Tigress beat Mozambique 71-66 to set up a semifinal clash against Cameroon on Friday.

 

Cameroon beat Egypt 76-54 in their quarterfinal match.

 

Joyce Ekworomadu dropped 20 points for the Nigerians as they won all two of the four quarters. D’Tigress won the first quarter 20-13 before Mozambique took the second quarter 23-21. Nigeria lost the third quarter 18-12 but they returned stronger in the last quarter to win 18-12.

 

Adaora Elonu also gave D’Tigress another 13 points to help Nigeria reach their fifth semi-finals in the history of the tournament, while Ndidi Madu got the highest rebounds (13) and four points in the game.

 

Nigeria outclassed Mozambique in all aspects of the game as they scored 52.2 per cent of their two-point chances against their opponents’ 40.9 per cent. D’Tigress also scored 28.6 per cent of their three-point chances against Mozambique’s 17.2 per cent.

 

Nigeria had 28 points from the bench against Mozambique’s five and their biggest lead was with 10 points while Mozambique only had the biggest lead of three points.

 

Nigeria had 45 rebounds against Mozambique’s 36 but Mozambique had the best free throws conversion rate as they converted 83.*** per cent of the chances they had while Nigeria could only convert 28.6 per cent.

 

D’Tigress have won the AfroBasket only twice since its debut in 1966. They have placed third only once and will seek to reach their third final on Friday.

 

Nigeria are still the highest scoring side in the tournament as they have scored 473 points while they have only conceded 351 points.
