Learn to decode what your body says

Your body can never have enough of good foods; and that is why your daily meals must include at least a fruit; while vegetables must never be rare on your plate.

The reason is simple: when you eat healthy, you will stay healthy and strong.

Consultant Nutritionist, Dr. Tobi Lawrence, says the human body has a way of rebelling against bad dietary habits. And that ‘rebellion’ comes with different body reactions.

Belching and farting

Of course, farting and belching are universal and every human engages in them because, to a certain extent, they are proof that your body is working! However, when your body is denied too much of nutritional foods, then your digestive system will ‘speak’ for itself.

Physicians say certain foods can weaken the oesophageal sphincter — that is the valve-like organ that is designed to keep food and wind in the stomach.

Lawrence says foods that weaken the valve include peppermint, chocolate, fatty meats, fried foods and caffeine. Again, he says, drinking beer or carbonated drinks, especially if they are cold, can make you belch all the time.

He recommends eating of fruit and vegetables, in addition to our regular traditional diet.

Delayed healing

Experts say when the body is in need of healing — whether as a result of injury or medical procedures such as surgery — the patient must eat foods that are rich in protein.

“The human body needs the amino acids that are in protein-rich foods to regenerate cells and tissues that may have been damaged by injury. Proteins and calories are vital when it comes to the healing process,” says General Practitioner, Dr. Kunle Abiodun.

Lawrence adds that foods such as beef, pork, chicken, turkey, eggs, milk, yoghurt and cheese contain animal proteins that help the body to meet its protein needs.

“The same goes for foods that are rich in vitamin C; and they include citrus such as oranges and tangerines, peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, salmon, walnuts, chicken, beef, eggs, etc.”

Falling hair

Hair experts say that a head full of hair is an evident of good health. But sometimes, people do experience hair weakness that make the hair to fall off.

Lawrence says only protein-rich foods can control the menace.

“High-protein foods include low-fat meats, beans, nuts, seeds, and eggs,” he says.

Brittle nails

Those who wear artificial nails or use adhesive glues on their nails may not really know the true state of their nail health.

However, physicians say if your fingernails break frequently, it might be because your body lacks magnesium.

High magnesium foods include dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fish, beans, whole grains, avocados, yoghurt, bananas, and dried fruit.

Premature ageing

We all age. And that is normal. However, scientists are warning that wrinkles can appear on your face earlier than normal if your diet is poor.

Lawrence assures that eating foods that are rich in vitamins A and E is the best way to fight premature ageing.

“These foods are rich in antioxidants and they include avocado, green vegetables, sea foods such as prawn, trout fish, extra-virgin olive oil, etc.”

Cold hands

If your hands always feel cold and clammy, don’t blame poor circulation for it. This is because it may be an indication that you have iodine deficiency. Eating sea foods such as shrimps; and iodine-rich foods such as yoghurt and potatoes is recommended.

Cracked tongue

Normally, a healthy tongue is pink, Abiodun says. “However, among other things, unhealthy tongue can manifest in form of discolouration and soreness. Sometimes, too, the tongue may become enlarged, with red taste buds dotting the surface.

“Possible causes include deficiencies of folic acid and vitamin B-12. Again, if you have what is derisively called ‘geographic tongue,’ you may be Vitamin B-deficient,” the GP says.

Lawrence says eating more beef liver, kidney, egg yolk, chicken giblets, plenty of green vegetables, assorted fruits such as oranges, bananas, etc., is the way out.

Dry skin

If your body is not getting enough vitamin A, it will be evident in your skin. So, to get radiant skin and maintain it, eat high vitamin A-rich foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, lettuce, bell peppers, fish, liver, and tropical fruits.

Bad teeth

Abiodun says tooth decay and gum disease will always plague people who eat wrong diet, as many researchers believe that these diseases progress faster and are more severe in patients who eat poor diets.

Foods such as fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, milk, meat, chicken, fish or beans are recommended.

Again, always keep your mouth moist by drinking much water; while you must avoid foods that cling to the teeth such as cakes, candy and dried fruits.

Instead, eat dental-healthy foods such as nuts, raw vegetables, plain yoghurt, and sugarless gum or candy.

The bottom line: If you feel unwell, please see the doctor.

If not for any other reason, eat the right foods for the sake of your partner (the south should send no one to their early grave) :D
