Calllaris
In a letter to the US president, president Muhammadu Buhari last week condemned the terrorist attack on the Pulse Night Club, Orlando, Florida, United States. He described the attack as “criminal”. The letter was addressed to the Ambassador of the United States in Nigeria, James Entwistle. President Buhari conveyed Nigeria’s heartfelt sympathy to President Barrack Obama and the people of the United States of America. “President Buhari extends his most sincere condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the victims. “The President condemns such criminal, cowardly attack, wherever it might occur, as an attack on all decent, democratic, peaceful people. “Every terrorist attack only strengthens Nigeria’s resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States and other countries in the frontline of the war on terror,” the letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari read. President Buhari called “on all peace-loving nations to commit themselves whole-heartedly to multilateral cooperation and collaborative actions aimed at eradicating the scourge of international terrorism.” Nice, you think? But If you too are baffled at this concern GMB is showing over the very horrible and recent attack on 'our' people in the Orlando Night Club shooting like I am then its very normal because I remember vividly his past statements concerning LGBT people in Nigeria and general Recall that in 2015, in a meeting with the same US president; Barrack Obama, our president openly condemned homosexuality calling it “abhorrent” as well stating clearly that there is no room for homosexuals in Nigeria. How does one believe that the president’s sympathy is genuine, given that in his very 'before', the LGBT home community has continued to suffer seriously especially in this administration? In Festac few days ago, report has that a young man was apprehended by men of the NPF, phone seized and searched. When they saw contents interpreted as homosexual, they resort to detain him for five days and soon after extort the sum of 105,000 naira from him as settlement to avoid going to court. Last week also in Jos, there were other reports of mob attacks on 20 young men over suspicions of homosexuality. Extortion, arrest and persecution of people over their real or perceived sexual orientation is just on the increase in Nigeria, in this same administration that wrote a letter calling LGBT people peaceful??. GMB if you are actually concerned about the lives of LGBT people, then you have to do something more home based. its largely in your hands afterall.
