UN calls for world wide decriminalisation of homosexuality

The United Nations has called for the decriminalisation of homosexuality following several reports from different countries across the world showing how badly LGBTIQ persons are treated.

In a report released early last week, the United Nations human rights chief Zeid Raad al-Hussein said that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people are victims of “pervasive violent abuse, harassment and discrimination” in all regions of the world.

He said that most countries are doing very little to protect its citizens from hate crimes based on their sexual orientation and gender identity as human rights violations has continued to increase in their regions. He noted there had been little decrease in anti-LGBTQ violence and discrimination, since the first of such reports in 2011 but hoped "reports like this would work to change that "

In the 160 paged report, a lot of human rights crimes were looked into. From the issue of limiting free speech to terrorism and the terrorists acts of groups like Boko Haram, yet prevalently in the report were a number of broader issues dealing with the rights of LGBTQ persons and the wide-spread violent abuse and discrimination faced by them. According to the guardian, the report "..paints a picture of a systemic abuse against sexual minorities"

For example, a 2010 law passed in Kyrgyzstan which banned “gay propaganda” was condemned along side an anti-terrorism bill which could be interpreted to allow banning pro-LGBTQ websites from the internet.

"Brazil reported 310 documented murders in 2012 “in which homophobia or transphobia was a motive”

"The trans murder monitoring project, which collects reports of homicides of transgender people, lists 1,612 murders in 62 countries between 2008 and 2014. And the inter-American commission on human rights reported 594 hate-related killings of LGBTIQ people in the 25 countries of the Organisation of American States between January 2013 and March 2014"

Another point applauded Turkey for the action they’ve taken to curb violence against women but quickly noted the lack of protections for LGBTQs both under the law and in practice. On the other side of the issue, it applauded the Swedish Federation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (RFSL) for its work to get countries to accept LGBTQ refugees that seek asylum because of discrimination and persecution in their home country.

The report then included 20 different ways to address the problems it discovered; like banning conversion or ex-gay (gay-cure) therapy and involuntary treatment, forced sterilization of trans people and ending forced genital and anal examinations to 'prove' whether someone is LGBT.

In conclusion, the report suggests that countries should work to decriminalize and remove bans on consensual sex between adult members of the same sex and work harder to pass hate crime laws that serves as protection for LGBTQ persons...

It also called on states to give legal recognition to same-sex couples and their children -implying, but not mentioning, equal marriage and to guarantee asylum for any LGBTI people whose lives may be in danger due to their sexuality, also to work harder to enact legislation to protect LGBTQ people from hate speech and discrimination.

Nigeria is one of the 74 countries in the world that criminalizes homosexuality with up to 14 years imprisonment. The anti gay bill in the country is touted to be the harshest in the modern world yet there have been extensive work and countless reports of human right abuses and violations documented by activists and human rights organizations within the country.

You'd be surprised at how much these efforts are reflecting. The past week featured Nigeria's gender issues (women as kitchen utensils) and 'LGBT Nigeria so much, in the Intl. picture. So yes, all the little works are gently rubbing off

Check out this close attention (attention to the uniqueness of the law in Nigeria is mostly needful at this stage) on LGBT Nigeria and issues, 4 days ago: https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/10/20/nigeria-harsh-laws-severe-impact-lgbt-community
