This pocket friendly DIY project is eco-friendly and requires little or no stress at all. Below are natural ways you can get rid of ants in our homes using natural methods.

1) The vinegar method

Scientifically, it has been proven that ants communicate using sounds, touch and -the golden ticket here- pheromones (chemical signals). Ants perceive smells with their antenna and because of this; they can determine the direction and intensity of scents. Making use of white vinegar at all entrances or any path that you know of, it makes it difficult for them to creep back to the food source or cool dry place they have been invading. The white vinegar disrupts their scent trails and this makes it hard for them to communicate. Vinegar is safe and can be used even around children unlike various harmful insecticides. All you need is part vinegar, water and a clean cloth. Mix the vinegar with water and spray or swipe down every entrance you know or suspect the ants might be getting in by.

2) Make a chalk line

Most ants are beneficial, because they kill real pests such as fleas and bedbugs. That’s no consolation when they start invading your kitchen cabinets. Colonies regularly send out lone ants to check for food sources. If you see an individual ant strolling across your coffee table, don’t let it make it back to the nest alive. It’ll tell the colony where you spilled the apple juice. Have you ever noticed that ants and sidewalk chalk just don’t seem to mix? That’s because they don’t! Ants that stumble through chalk get covered in the stuff while some other people believe that the minerals in the chalk such as talc kill the ant. This DIY project requires no stress at all because all you need is a sidewalk chalk. Draw thick lines at the suspected entrance and repeat as needed.

***) Flour or cinnamon

Similar to the sidewalk chalk method, flour or cinnamon are great DIY natural options besides making use of harsh and harmful insecticides in your homes. On one hand, it might look a bit messy but on the other hand, it’s a natural way to deter ants from your kitchen. Either of these ingredients works really fast and effective in getting rid of ants. This DIY project is equally stress free as all that is required is the sprinkle of either of them on the suspected entrance. Also, it is eco-friendly. Get rid of the ants naturally and save more money.

4) Step up your cleaning habit

Most times, these pests attracted to dirt smells too. Sometimes, you are not just cleaning your kitchen enough or carefully as you should. Endeavour to keep your counters, drawers, cupboard and even refrigerators free of crumbs. At every point in time, clean up sticky messes as soon as possible. If there happens to be crumbs or sweet mess in your room, no matter where it is located they will find it. Step up your cleaning habit because this is the first natural way to get rid of ants in your kitchen and home generally.

5) Baking soda and powdered sugar solution

Yes, ants are attracted to sugar but a mixture of baking soda and powdered sugar kills them instantly. This DIY project equally requires no stress at all and little money spent. All you need is a teaspoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of powdered sugar and water. Mix both ingredients together in a jar. Ant cannot differentiate between a baking soda and sugar because both are similar in size. The baking soda kills them because it reacts with the acid in their digestive system and they explode. Place the sugar and baking soda mixture in strategic locations and wait for the baking soda to do its thing. You can use a jar lid or something similar to keep the bait contained, or you can place it directly on the surface where the ants are prevalent.

Spraying around the exterior of the house with Ortho's Home Defense has always worked for me.
