Rumours of a gay character on a Turkish Netflix series have fuelled anti-LGBT bigotry in the country. New Turkish coming-of-age drama Love 101, which is set to begin on April 24, unleashed a torrent of fury over unconfirmed rumours that it will feature a gay character. It’s technically legal to be gay in Turkey, but LGBT+ people in the country have few legal rights and face extreme stigma – with Pride parades still often brutally repressed by police. The Love 101 rumours have fuelled a homophobic moral panic in the country. Turkish TV watchdog says country ‘will not tolerate’ gay character on Netflix show. According to Reuters, the president of the Radio and Television Supreme Council Ebubekir Sahin made clear: “We will not tolerate broadcasts that are contrary to the national and spiritual values of our society.” Online, posts have racked up thousands of likes accusing Netflix of “trying to normalise immorality”, branding the streaming giant “Islam’s enemy” for airing the show during Ramadan, Netflix – which has championed LGBT+ representation in many of its releases – has not confirmed or denied reports about the show, but has warned of “misinformation” spreading online. The streaming giant told Turkish media: “A lot of false information is spreading from fake accounts… believe only what you hear from us about the series and the characters, not the rumours.” An official release states of the show: “Set primarily in 1998, with present day vignettes that frame each episode, LOVE 101 follows a group of 17-year-old misfits who set their mind on keeping their favourite teacher in town, so that they can stay in school. “They plot for her to fall in love with the new basketball coach, but in doing so they don’t realize that they are actually discovering love themselves. “Through this journey they will learn they have more in common than they know, are stronger together than they are apart and that love can’t be manufactured.” Plenty of people want better LGBT+ representation in Turkey While the show has faced a homophobic backlash, plenty of Turks on social media are crying out for better LGBT+ representation. One wrote: “i wasn’t planning on watching this show but homophobes were so loud and got me interested in the show. thank u a**holes for free publicity”. Another added: “Netflix Turkey said gay rights. And the homophobes stay mad”. But homophobia in the country is no joke. In June 2019, police clad in riot gear fired tear gas at Istanbul Pride marchers to disrupt the event, marking the fifth year the event has been prevented from going ahead. Source -

A Florida police chief who allegedly claimed that his deputy died from complications from coronavirus because he is a “homosexual who attended homosexual ‘sexual’ events” has been suspended. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy Shannon Bennett was 39 when died on April 3, just a week after testing positive for COVID-19. The Davie police officer had left work on March 23, feeling unwell, and went to the hospital the following day where he was tested for coronavirus. Bennett was a proudly out gay man who was due to marry his fiancé, Jonathan Frey, later this year. He is believed to be the first such line-of-duty death from COVID-19 in Florida. However, Davie Police chief Dale Engle commented that Bennett contracted the virus because he was a “homosexual who attended homosexual ‘sexual’ events”, a complaint against the chief alleged, according to WLPG Local 10. Florida Fraternal Order of Police chief of staff Mike Tucker issued the complaint Tuesday, alleging that Engle “berated” officers who expressed worry about coronavirus and yelled his “backstory” about how Bennett developed COVID-19. “This obviously was shocking to the members that were present, who are right now looking for reassurance,” Tucker told the outlet, “who were looking for guidance.” After the complaint, Engle was suspended from duty Saturday. “As of April 11, 2020, Police Chief Dale Engle was placed on Administrative leave pending further review of allegations brought forward by the Fraternal Order of Police,” Davie’s Town Administrator Richard Lemack said in a statement Saturday night. “The allegations will be investigated in accordance with the Town’s Equal Employment Opportunity compliance policy by outside counsel.” Tucker added: “For any reference to be made to the tragic passing of one of our brothers at the Broward Sheriff’s Office is, if true, is absolutely not only unacceptable but is just shameful. “And it’s not indicative of the professionals of the town of Davie that we know.” Source

Families in need waited hours to get their hands on fresh fruit, vegetables and other non-perishable goods that have become hard to find in traditional stores as panic-buying leaves shelves empty. The sight of long rows of cars waiting outside food banks has become more frequent since the pandemic has made its impact on the United States, with similar scenes seen in Florida and Pennsylvania in the last two weeks. 'The need is that great,' San Antonio Food Bank President and CEO Eric Cooper said of the huge turnout. 'We are moving through food so fast, this is our second big distribution this week, but there are hundreds of distributions that are going on all the time.' The San Antonio event dubbed 'Mega Giveaway' will be held twice a week for as long as stay-at-home orders are in place in the city, available to people who pre-register online. Thursday marked the fourth time they held the event - and the largest turnout yet. Michael Guerra, the food bank's chief resources officer, said 5,000 families signed up for the latest event, but even more showed up. While preaching on Friday April 10th, Pastor Chris said the church is not a place of infection but rather a place of blessings. He prayed against anyone coming to church and getting infected. The clergyman who last week said the lockdown in Lagos and Abuja was for the Federal government to install 5G network in the state, said any wise government knows not to trouble the church. The best thing in any government is to always leave the church alone. It is always the best thing. The wisest leader understands that. They leave the church alone. Yours might still be growing Surprisingly, Planned Parenthood Toronto states that breasts can grow past puberty and into your early 20s. An Orthodox Israeli rabbi has claimed the spread of the deadly coronavirus in Israel and around the world is divine retribution for gay pride parades. The remarks by Rabbi Meir Mazuz, reported by the Israel Hayom daily on Sunday, drew condemnation from rights groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, which urged him to apologize. An influential Sephardic rabbi, Mazuz is the former spiritual leader of the defunct ultra-nationalist and homophobic Yachad party, and is head of the Kiseh Rahamim yeshiva in Bnei Brak. On Saturday night he gave a talk at the yeshiva, during which, according to the report, he said a pride parade is “a parade against nature, and when someone goes against nature, the one who created nature takes revenge on him.” Mazuz said that countries all over the world are being called to account because of their gay pride events, “except for the Arab countries that don’t have this evil inclination.” That was why, he claimed — falsely suggesting there has only been one case of infection in the Arab world — they have not seen a spread of coronavirus. The outbreak in Iran, one of the most serious in any country, he explained as being due to the wicked ways of Iranians and “their hatred of Israel.” According to the newspaper, Mazuz had earlier claimed Israel would be protected from the coronavirus. “It is regrettable that in times like these when the whole world comes together to eradicate coronavirus, Rabbi Mazuz finds it appropriate to blame the virus’s outbreak on the LGBTQ community. We harshly condemn his statements and urge him to apologize,” the ADL’s Israel branch said in a statement. The modern Orthodox Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah group also condemned Mazuz’s remarks. “Using this time of need to incite against the LGBT community is unacceptable. Trying to get people to return to religion cannot come at the price of harming others,” it said in a statement. Israel has thus far had 39 cases of coronavirus, including 14 new cases announced on Sunday night, but no deaths. Mazuz is no stranger to controversy or hateful rhetoric. In November 2015 he claimed gay pride parades and other forms of “sinful behavior” were the reason terrorists murdered Eitam and Naama Henkin on October 1, 2015. At a memorial event for the Henkins, Mazuz said that their shooting death at the hands of Palestinian terrorists had been a form of divine retribution. In 2016 Mazuz attributed the collapse of a Tel Aviv parking garage that killed six people and an explosion that destroyed the Amos-6 satellite to Shabbat desecration. Israel has two major gay pride parades each year, one in Tel Aviv and another in the capital, Jerusalem, which is billed as promoting tolerance. Source
