    Going Through With It

I read an old thread a few minutes ago and it was a reminder of how much I enjoyed conversations about Nigerian lesbians and whether or not they will go through with it against all odds. Ten or Twenty years from now (picture it if you haven't), could you honestly say that you see yourself ending up with a woman or staying unmarried?
  2. It came as a rude shock to Nigerians when Charly Boy’s daughter, Dewy Oputa, revealed on social media that she is a lesbian. She made this known on Instagram during the week by sharing photos and a video of herself and her girlfriend. While speaking with Sunday Scoop, Dewy said she shared the post because she got tired of hiding and decided it was time to live in her truth. She said, “My mission for creating a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer platform is to provide a safe place for youths in the African community. I strive to create an accepting and welcoming community where everyone is free to express themselves and be loved for who they are. I want a place where individuals such as myself can create authentic friendships and thrive as the person they were born to be. Dewy, however, admitted that it was not easy for her parents when she revealed her sexuality to them. “I can’t pinpoint the exact age I found out about my sexuality, but I was much younger. When I came out to my parents, it took them a while to adjust but my happiness comes first. I don’t feel bad about the negative comments my sexuality post has generated. I knew Nigerians would always have negative things to say and I was mentally prepared for it. I’m not here to sway anybody’s point of view; I’m here to bring awareness,” she said. On whether she nurses any fear about coming to Nigeria considering that there is an anti-gay law in place in the country, the stylist and property management practitioner said, “To be honest, I do not have any fears. I think there are far more critical issues that are yet to be resolved. So, why should my sexual orientation affect the next man? Nigerians that have a problem with the LGBTQ community need to mind their business and focus on the critical life and death situation at hand. Love has never killed the next man.” Meanwhile, Charly Boy has come out to support his daughter, Dewy Oputa, after she shared a cozy photo of herself and her lesbian partner on social media. He told Sunday Scoop that he would always support his daughter irrespective of her choice of a sexual partner. He said, “She is my daughter, why won’t I support her even if she is whatever she is? My father supported me too. We can argue on moral grounds but we all have our rights to life. I fought for the gay community; so, if my daughter turns out to be this way, I should walk my talk.” Admitting that he might not like her sexuality personally, he said there was nothing he could do about it since she is an adult. The Area Father stated, “I have daughters who are married and have children, but she is the only one who has decided to be different. As long as she finds happiness or moves on with her life, I don’t have any problem with it. My father wanted me to be a lawyer and I told him I didn’t want to be a lawyer; I did what made me happy. “People can be talking based on moral grounds, but we are not in the position to judge. Nigeria is like this because of evil people and we should concentrate on those people; not my daughter’s sexuality.” Similarly, Charly Boy rubbished the anti-gay law in Nigeria, which imposed a 14-year jail term on any individual found guilty. “How many people have the law caught? Don’t we have a lot of homosexuals in the Senate or government? We know all these things. They should start with themselves. They shouldn’t be bothered about my child who is enjoying her life. I don’t have problems with anyone’s sexuality as long as they are good human beings. I am not in the same level with most Nigerians; so, my thinking is different,” he said. Source
  3. And yet more definitions and more labels. There are so many terms now; your head could literally burst if you do labels. So I felt it was just "sexual orientations", then I found out we had "romantic orientations" as well and that they are quite distinct. Same way gender identity is distinct from sexual orientation. Meaning you can be hetero-romantic, bi-romantic, and homo-romantic the same way that you can be heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual. However, the thing about these classifications is that they can be mixed: 1. Heterosexual Bi-romantic: One could be open to have sex with any gender (sexual orientation) but not open to fall in love or be in a romantic relationship with any gender (romantic orientation). Eg. I can have sex with either gender just for sexual fulfilment but have the desire to spend the rest of my life loving only one of either gender (male or female. 2. Bisexual Bi-romantic: One could be open to have sex with any gender (sexual orientation) and also open to fall in love or be in a romantic relationship with any gender (romantic orientation). Eg. I can have sex with both male and female and also able to spend the rest of my life together and in love with either depending on who makes me happy at that point. In a nutshell, for many people, their sexual orientation and romantic orientation may align. For some, they may be different. 🤷 N.B. And all this is assuming that romance and sex are not on the same continuum. I see the romantic orientation part as majorely influenced by society and culture. I mean if you can have sex with a particular gender, why the hell can't you fall in love or spend the rest of your life with that gender? In as much as I find this quite laughable, I see some sense in it.

    How Certain Are You...?

For Lesbians: How certain are you that you are gay? What makes you so sure? For Bisexuals: How certain are you that you are not 100% lesbian or 100% straight? This question came up in a conversation and I thought to share it with the good people of NL Lol. It would be very interesting to read all your responses.
  5. The young indigenous rapper and a popular voice at Cool Fm Lagos state talked about his Nigerian gay business partner and the experience he had working with him. He said this on the new episode of Hot Topics with Latasha Ngwube while reacting to the unfortunate regarding the arrest of the 42-suspected homosexual men that were recently arraigned in court by the Lagos state government. Read his comments below; “I have no problems with Homosexuals. An openly homosexual business partner here paid one of the biggest and most successful money I have made in my life to me in Nigeria. I have no problem with them but this is the law of the land. You have to be much smarter. You can’t just come and say I am gay and that law is a wrong law because you are still arrestable by the laws of the land. When I saw that story, I first had a problem with the Lagos state police. When I now heard that there were 12 minors involved, I said this is a child-s*x p****graphy ring and something deeper is happening here and on that account, they should all be arrested, there should be an investigation done to find out if the kids were really defiled and when they have found this out, they should properly rehabilitate those children. Something out of the ordinary is going on. But apart from that, what two grown men decide to do with themselves in their private place or corner that is entirely up to them but the law of the land still states this is illegal”. Source
