  1. Winnie Mandela Winnie Mandela is dead. She was beautiful and strong. Mandiba saw her at a bus stop in 1957. She was strikingly beautiful. He took her out the next week. And married her the next year. In her youth , she was voluptuous, enthralling. They had Zindzi and Zedani . Then Nelson Mandela was thrown into prison. Winnie took over the struggle. Fought like a bull. And went in and out of prison. She was routinely intimidated, harassed, tortured. She fought back with fire and brimstone. She said match boxes and necklacing only would liberate the country from devilish apartheid. Her methods endeared her to the poor and jobless. And estranged her from many. She was an Icon. She was the symbol of the struggle. She was unrestrained. She had a security outfit- the Mandela United Football Club. The coach of that club that murdered 14 year old Stompie. Stompie, a club member, was labeled a rat. Stompie's death exposed Winnies nefarious use of the football club. She was convicted of kidnapping Mandela came out of jail in 1990. They walked hand in hand- the king and the queen. When the cameras left, the rumors Madela had heard although imprisonment came to life in his bedroom. Winnie had young boys. One of them ANC lawyer called Mpofu. Winnie went out regularly. And came back routinely drunk. Mandela gave her a new slate. He understood the deprivations she suffered during his 27 year absence. She soiled the slate. Winnie could no longer be a wife, that sort of wife. They separated 2 years after. She remained Deputy minister. But not for long. She was found guilty of corruption and fraud. She relinquished her position in party and government. She was no longer head of the powerful ANC women's wing. Two years after separation, they were divorced. She received an undisclosed settlement. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission found that she sponsored murders and kidnaps. They were not malicious stories sowed by Botha. Many of those tortured and killed were black ANC members. They demanded an apology. They knew understood her circumstances. She went down the social ladder. And made very uncomplimentary remarks about Mandiba and Desmond Tutu. She taught they were stooges of the whites. Pressure was put on her. She recanted. Winnie Mandela was a Field Marshall. She won big treacherous wars. But she couldn't contend with some little foxes in her life. ~Ugo Egbujo Goodnight, Mama.
