The military has taken over Zimbabwe, placing President Robert Mugabe under house arrest and detaining senior government officials in what many are expecting to be the beginning of a transition of power.

Military officials denied carrying out a coup as it took over the state TV and broadcast a message insisting the president and his wife were “secure”, adding that they were targeting a ring of government plotters following a power struggle that saw the vice-president flee the country last week.

Jacob Zuma, the South African president, said he had spoken to Mr Mugabe by phone who told him he was “confined to his home but said that he was fine”.

"It is not a military takeover of government," an army spokesman said in a televised statement. "We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the president... and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.

"We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.

"As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy."

The address came hours after several loud explosions echoed across central Harare and troops seized the headquarters of the ZBC, Zimbabwe's state broadcaster.

"Although it doesn’t look like a coup, it is a coup,”  Zimbabwe analyst Alex Magaisa, a senior Zimbabwe legal analyst  based in the UK, told The Telegraph.

It better be a coup. Why are Africans like this sef, you don't only want to die in power, you also want to install your wife as your successor. If you guys can give him Sadam Hussein treatment then by all means do. Nonsense.

Hay, you people should leave Mugabe for me nau, 😞 who has he hurt? All he wants is to lead till he dies, and for his wife to take over. Since when is that a bad thing? Don't we all want good things for our partners? Muga baby is only being a caring and thoughtful husband and ya'll need to leave him alone 😞

Mugabe makes first appearance since military take over

*doses off to sleep while talking*

President Robert Mugabe emerged yesterday from house arrest to attend a university graduation ceremony in the capital, Harare, in a staged public appearance that belied the reality that he is no longer in control of the country he has ruled for 37 years.

The veteran leader arrived at Zimbabwe Open University in this  blue-and-yellow gown, (pic below), accompanied by his security detail, in his first public appearance since being detained in Wednesday's army takeover.

Mugabe's appearance was apparently designed to convey a business-as-usual atmosphere -- the army generals pulling the strings in Harare are desperate not to give the impression they are orchestrating an unconstitutional coup.

At the Zimbabwe Open University, situated on the outskirts of the capital, Mugabe conferred degrees on students as if nothing was untoward.

But if he thought that attending the event would make it look as if he was still in charge, the tactic backfired. The 93-year-old said little and drifted in and out of sleep on stage.

       **

Behind the scenes, efforts by the military, to push Mugabe aside appears to be foundering. Mugabe is reported to be resisting a plan to oust him, and the generals are said to be frustrated by his refusal to go quietly.

"The President is pushing back on a deal to replace him with an interim leader" a source said.

Frustrated with Mugabe's resistance, the commander of the defense forces said the President had until Friday to change his stance, "or we do it the hard way," another source said.

Meanwhile there is a protest rally scheduled to take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on Saturday, November 18, calling for the resignation of the country's embattled president. The mass rally is being organized by some powerful organizations representing veterans of Zimbabwe’s liberation wars. It is expected to be One of the biggest, largest turnout by the Zimbabwean population, to "finish the job the Army has started.” Participants are expected to march through the streets of Harare, the Zimbabwean capital, calling on Mugabe to step aside.

All Zimbabweans are expected to come out en - masse to protest in Harare's Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield on Saturday. The Zimbabwe's military says it supports this "peaceful and orderly"  march against Mugabe.

In a related move, Mugabe's ruling party is reportedly calling for him to step down.

"ZANU-PF provincial structures in all the country's 10 provinces met yesterday and called for the resignation of their First Secretary, President Robert Mugabe. They also called for the resignation of women's league Secretary and First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe from the party.

The military need tact. Of course coming out openly to admit they are carrying out a coup will only attract NATO since military coup is  now frown upon globally. So they need to stay low.

Mugabe not only knows this but playing their game.

Refusing resignation, he is left with none other option but to complete his tenure, if they try to impeach him

Stubborn Mugabe: stuns Zimbabwe as he refuses to quit

*seems he read an edited or different speech

Yesterday was another extra ordinary day in the history of Zimbabwe as their expectations to see Mugabe resign was cut short. Mugabe remains head of state against all the odds after refusing to resign as president.

He was expected to stand down in a historic address live on television after conceding to military takeover.

Instead he clings to power following a rambling speech which left the nation stunned and baffled.

In a statement delivered in Harare he claimed military intervention, which saw him placed under house arrest four days ago, was no challenge to his authority.

Speaking slowly and occasionally stumbling as he read from pages, Mugabe talked of the need for solidarity to resolve national problems.

He ended his speech by saying he will preside over an upcoming conference of the ruling Zanu-PF party.

His defiance comes despite his sacking by Zanu-PF and in the face of huge public opposition.

The news spelt a widespread disappointment for those who thought they were witnessing the end of the Mugabe era and celebrated in euphoric scenes in the streets of Zimbabwe yesterday.

His refusal to go plunges the country into deep uncertainty.

The leader of Zimbabwe’s influential war veterans said plans for impeachment would go ahead as scheduled from Tuesday.

Zimbabwean political analyst George Shire told BBC News that Mugabe would be seeking out loopholes and hoping to prolong the impeachment process. His aim is to complete his tenure, which ends next year.

* The generals involved in the military takeover said they will issue a statement on Monday.

Most people, including regular Zimbabweans and international observers are questioning Mugabe’s motivation for defiance. Others suspect the military is being bought over.

South African-based newspaper publisher Trevor Ncube tweeted yesterday that General Chiwenga’s is facing accusations he has “sold out” on the agreement to oust the 93 year old.

After the speech, the chief whip of Zimbabwe’s ruling party said the central committee had an option to proceed with impeaching Mugabe on Tuesday.

Lovemore Matuke said: “the speech was just surprising. It is not in line with what we expected. We had understood that his resignation was coming to avoid the embarrassment of impeachment.

“The army is taking its own route, and as politicians we are taking our own route, but the ultimate goal is to make sure he goes, which he should have done tonight.”

*

Note that during Mugabe's televised speech on Sunday, an array of senior commanders sat beside Mugabe as he made his speech. General Constantino Chiwenga, the general who led the takeover, turned the president’s pages as he spoke. Many looked stunned when Mugabe finished his speech saying “Thank you, good night.”

A microphone caught later muffled comments from the elderly leader referring to either a “long” or a “wrong” speech, leading to speculation that Mugabe may have deliberately or otherwise omitted pages or read content that varied substantially from that reportedly cleared with the military high command.

Most Zimbabweans, gathered at either a bar or at a spot, in the capital, aiming to celebrate Mugabe’s expected announcement of his resignation were frustrated.

One Zimbabwean  named Nyasha said: “I would be happy for him despite everything he has done to leave with dignity and just walk away. ... He is so stubborn.”
