Administrators FlyJ Posted October 23, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 23, 2014 The Nigeria national women’s team, the Falcons have qualified for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and in the process got their revenge over South Africa, who beat them 1-0 at the semi final stage of the 2012 Africa Women’s Championship. The Falcons were vastly superior to their South African opponents but wayward finishing meant that they had to wait till the 38th minute to take the lead through U-20 Best Player, Asisat Oshoala. Nigeria had started the brighter and Philadelphia Thokozile Mndaweni, who was between the sticks for Banyana Banyana was a bundle of nerves and twice within the first 15 minutes saw her making hurried clearances but the Falcons did not capitalise. Francisca Ordega had a chance in the in the 10th minute but she controlled the pass in the box with her hand. She was on the end of a pass from Oshoala in the 18t minute but was foiled by Mndaweni in a one-on-one situation. Seconds later Oshoala raced through but again Mndaweni was quickly off her line to save. Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Ibubeleye Whyte was almost tested from a Portia Modise shot from outside the box, which was marginally wide. But finally with the first half running out, Oshoala broke free and rounded a defender before her shot took a huge deflection from Banyana captain, Janine Van Wyk for her second goal of the tournament. The second followed as the clock showed 45 minutes as she lobbed the South Africa goalkeeper from 35 yards to record her second and Nigeria’s s second. The second half started with the Falcons trying to get a third but Banyana were resolute in their defending, as the match got more physical. Evelyn Nwabuoku tested Mndaweni from outside the box in the 56th minute and the goalkeeper conceded a corner kick. South Africa won their first corner kick in the 57th minute as Onome Ebi had to divert Jane’s free-kick away after Ugo Njoku had tripped Jane for the Falcon’s first yellow card – the second of the game. The referee ‘gifted’ Banyana Banyana a goal in the 67th minute as corner kick taken by Jane was adjudged to have crossed the line though video replays did not make the decision clearer. This gift gave the South Africans to push forward as the crowd started chanting for the South Africans. But it was the Falcons that produced the last shot on goal as Esther Sunday, on for Oshoala tested Mndaweni, who parried for a corner kick. But at the end of the game, the Nigerians were the ones celebrating as they made their seventh continental final. Source

Administrators FlyJ Posted October 23, 2014 Author Administrators Share Posted October 23, 2014 Yes, they always do. Sucks though that they are not as celebrated as the Super Eagles.
