Administrators FlyJ Posted October 26, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 26, 2014 The Super Falcons on Saturday in Windhoek, Namibia defeated the Lionesses of Cameroon 2-0 to reclaim the African Women’s Championship title which they lost to Equatorial Guinea in 2012. Nigeria are the most successful team in the history of the tournament after winning the title for the seventh time and qualifying for the 2015 Women’s World Cup holding in Canada. The Falcons shot to the lead in the 13th minute through Desire Oparanozie’s free kick and later got their second goal in the 44th through AsisatOshoala, who latched on an assist from Francisca Ordega. Both sides missed a good deal of chances but the Nigerians were dominant for a larger part of the encounter. The teams have also qualified for the World Cup by virtue of reaching the final. The Falcons emerged as the highest-scoring side in the tournament, netting 16 goals and conceding just three. In the third-place match, a lone strike from Ivory Coast’s Rebecca Ida was enough to down South Africa and earn the former a ticket to the Women’s World Cup. Both teams tested each other throughout the encounter and it was Ida whose strike found the back of the net in the 84th minute to break the deadlock. She almost doubled the lead two minutes later only to miss the target. South Africa were awarded the Fair Play award, while Ordega was voted as the Woman of the Match in the final.
