Administrators FlyJ Posted May 5, 2015 Administrators Share Posted May 5, 2015 Luggage maker Samsonite and tech giant Samsung are putting some brains into your bags. (Not literally, thank God.) According to The Daily Mail, the two companies are working on a new line of luggage that will let you track the location of your bags, tell you if they are being opened without your knowledge, and even move themselves. In an interview with the Mail, Samsonite CEO Ramesh Tainwala said that the company’s so-called smart luggage will include built-in GPS locators that will let you track their location using a companion smartphone app. So if you get off of your flight and don’t see your bag at the carousel, you can check the app to see where your things are. Better still, Tainwala said that the smart luggage will also be able to send you an alert when it is taken off of your plane, as well as when it is moved to the carousel, and if it is opened when you’re not around. The companies are also working to develop bags that can automatically check themselves in when you arrive at the airport. Basically, a chip built into the bags would automatically ping the airport when you arrive, identifying your luggage and remotely tagging it with your flight and destination. You would then drop your bags at a carousel that will check their weight and send an identification tag to your phone. This isn’t some far-out technology, either. Tainwala explained that airlines —including Emirates, Lufthansa, and KLM Air France — are all working with Samsonite to make remote luggage check-in a reality. But the coolest thing Samsonite and Samsung are working on is a self-propelled bag that will be able to follow you while you make your way around the airport. Though the self-driving luggage is still in the early development stages, Tainwala says it will be able to follow about 6 inches behind you, and will include a remote control and motor. It’s unlikely that your bags will be following you anytime soon, though, as Tainwala explained that the company is still working to make the motor and remote control portion small enough to fit into a bag without taking up too much space. Samsonite and Samsung aren’t the first companies to develop smart luggage. Last November, ***************’s Alyssa Bereznak got to check out a prototype smart bag from Bluesmart. The crowdfunded company was seeking $50,000 for its smart bag. It easily blew past the goal, eventually raising more than $2 million, thanks to promises that its luggage could weigh itself and act as your own personal device charger. Like the Samsonite and Samsung bags, the Bluesmart suitcase includes a built-in GPS tracker to help you locate it if you happen to misplace it. There’s also a remote lock that you can control via your smartphone. Bluesmart is still in its prototype stage, and should be available in time for the holiday shopping season.
