Super Falcons forward, Courtney Dike, has said the team will go beyond the group stage of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Nigeria will begin their campaign at the tournament on Monday against Sweden at the Winnipeg Stadium and the Falcons will be seeking to get a win over the Europeans for the first time after two previous meetings have ended in a stalemate and a loss.

Dike, who also played at the 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup, said the team are ready for their opponents in their group and will ensure they go as far as possible in the competition.

“I am very optimistic that we will go very far in this competition – beyond the group stage – because we have very good girls in the team and there is a kind of chemistry among us that has bonded us together in a positive way,” she said.

“There is excitement here ahead of the competition and the preparations are geared towards achieving the goals we have set for ourselves as a team.

“The other teams in our group are also good enough and they will also have prepared and be ready to face us here in Canada.

“But it is not about them but about us and what we want to get out of here, which is progression – first from the group stage – and which we have set our eyes and focus on.”

FIFA Women’s World Cup: Nigeria, Sweden in ***-*** draw

Sweden gave up a 2-0 lead to Nigeria only for substitute Linda Sembrant to put the Europeans back in the lead, which Francisca Ordega cancelled out with three minutes remaining to give the sides a point each with a ***-*** draw in the first game of Group D at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

The Super Falcons, having never beaten Sweden on their three previous occasions, came out flying in the first few minutes and had the Swedes on the back foot for much of the first quarter of an hour.

But an unfortunate own goal from Desire Oparanozie gave the Swedes the lead 20 minutes into the match. Emma Berglund’s flicked header from a corner kick was redirected into Nigeria’s net by the No9’s chest. A poor clearance off another Swedish corner made it 2-0, Nilla Fischer able to tap in to an empty net after the ball made its way through the crowd.

Nigeria’s front line refused to go quiet, however, and just after the break two goals in quick succession leveled matters. Ngozi Okobi’s brilliant first afforded the No13 plenty of room and space and coolly fired past Hedvig Lindahl.

Three minutes later, Asisat Oshoala, the golden shoe winner at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 opened her account for this tournament with a fine individual effort after a well-played ball out of the back from Onome Ebi.

Substitute Linda Sembrant handed the lead back to Sweden after good build-up play on the left side resulted in Lina Nilsson’s cross that Sembrant managed direct past Precious Dede with her thigh.

However, Francisca Ordega would salvage a point for the Super Falcons three minutes from time with a shot that managed to slip through the legs of Lindahl, leaving matters level at ***-***.

So sad... they will need a win against USA on Wednesday to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round which I think is highly unlikely considering the depth in the USA squad. ..

Wishing them luck with that.

They lost against Australia.

Australia 2 - Nigeria 0

I don't see them winning the US. Those girls r born ballers and like @Aby said, the width in the USA squad is wicked.

Falcons need team spirit to overcome USA – Mabo

Former Super Falcons coach, Ismaila Mabo, has said the team would need to dig deep to beat the United States of America’s women team on Wednesday.

Nigeria have lost thrice in three meetings with the USA and the Falcons need a win in Wednesday’s match to stand any chance of qualifying from Group D after their 2-0 loss to Australia on Friday.

Nigeria sit bottom of the group with one point from their two matches with the point coming from their opening day ***-*** draw with Sweden, who are third with two points.

Mabo, who led the team to a quarterfinal exit in 1999, believes that although the Falcons have a daunting challenge against the USA, they can achieve a victory if the players can imbibe the team spirit which helped them in their first match.

“The match on Wednesday is a decider for the two teams,” he said.

“It is true that we have always had it difficult against the USA and we have not recorded a victory against them.

“I believe that if the players imbibe the right attitude on the field of play, they can do what people think is impossible.

“The team spirit they employed against the Swedes in their first match, which saw them come from two goals down to earn a draw, can see them beat the USA for the first time.

“Really it will be a very difficult task but football is not always predictable and we cannot take it from them that the team is a good one.”

Mabo added that the loss to Australia would also spur the players to aim for qualification from the group.
