Earlier this month, the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja nullified the victory of Governor Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the April 11 Taraba Guber elections and declared Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan‎ of the APC as winner.

This nullification was on the ground that there was no valid candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that contested the election, adding that the PDP did not hold a valid primary election, the tribunal ruled.

It therefore ordered the immediate installation of Ms Aisha Alhassan as the governor o Taraba state.

This is the first time a woman is elected governor in Nigeria, a country which has and is still battling equal rights for its fairer sex.

The last time a woman was governor in Nigeria occurred in 2006 -2007 when Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba was declared governor of Anambra state on November 2006 after the impeachment of Peter Obi by the state legislature for alleged gross misconduct.

She then was taken off by Febraury 2007, lasting only four months on the Anambra hot seat.

Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan has however proved to be a remarkable woman by strength and virtue, here are some things you may not know about the lady known as Mama Taraba.

1. She clearly won the peoples vote through popularity, grace and hard work

2. She is a Fulani, and popularly called "Mama Taraba"

***. She is a trained lawyer and has been very active in the court room, her days.

4. She is the first female to be appointed Taraba State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and also the first woman to be appointed as Secretary FCT judicial council.

5. She is the First female Senator from Taraba state and got her ticket being part of the Peoples Democratic Party, She later decamped to the All Progressive Congress.

6.Though an avid Muslim herself, she enjoys huge backing from Taraba Christians and Muslims as she is known as a caring person, henceforth the name Mama Taraba.

7. It’s said that during the last assembly she wanted to become the senate president, the position then held by Senator David Mark.

8. She is one of the women nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari for a Ministerial Position and will now have to choose between Taraba and a Ministerial appointment.

9. She is an avid football fan and even supports the Taraba State Football Association. Nice one.

10. There is currently celebrations and jubilation ongoing in Jalingo, Taraba state by this recent development

Editors note: True, this judgment was on the grounds of wasted votes, yet a land mark for the judiciary in Nigeria's democracy as well as a victory for the minority. The era of impunity and discrimination by gender is surely on its way out. Thank you Amina for believing and insisting

All parties do have room to explore any discomfort they may have with the judgment, but of course governor Ishaku will step aside for Mama Taraba in 21 days if he doesn't deem it fit to appeal the tribunals judgment.

Yes, if the governor or the party did not appeal before the end of November, Ms. Alhassan will have to choose between staying in Taraba and remaining in Abuja.
