Mama sed color 'nd class don't fit 

It reminds me of mister milkman 

Wit 'is pale skin and whiskey breath

Sed my negro breasts need taming

I don't know what a taming is

 Papa sed I black and female, that bad 

Black women go to hell cos they ugly like mama

So he take her money an' hit her, us too

 Mama sed church's the hope of black women

It save her from pa's itchy hands

So I went for a baptism

Reverend beg I choose Mary, like Mary Watson

 But I remember Mary Watson 

White lady that plays the organ on Sundays 

Always drinking and cussing 

So I sed no 'nd he got angry

 

 My sister sed she like miss kettle 

Cos she teach her how to sew unlike ma

Cos she clean and white

Cos she say"my lil poor thing "to her in class

But she the only black girl in class

And miss kettle say it to her

She change her name too, sed it make her look pretty 

 

 I'm grown and married 

Mama to a tiny dark baby

Who look 't me with big eyes

As if to ask me," why you so dumb and ugly? "

People say I lucky my man good 

Cos he don't hit me like papa

He don't drink and cuss 

He only f***k young boys

And that good for me..
